St. John American Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and an equal opportunity employer. We seek an energetic, responsible, personable, and faith-motivated individual to lead our Youth and Family Ministry efforts. This position offers schedule flexibility and the unique opportunity to work with a new pastor to write the next chapter in our Youth and Family Ministry program. This position pays $18-$24 hourly and has a start date no later than Sept. 1, 2024 depending on the candidate’s availability.

Job Title: Director of Youth and Family Ministry 

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry will create and implement youth and family events that involve the growth of St. John’s young people in faith, leadership, servanthood and general participation in the life of the church.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Commitment to the person and mission of Jesus Christ and to the mission of the Church consistent with the practices of the ELCA and a willingness to share that faith with others.
2. Strong leadership instincts, pro-active and positive communication skills and the ability to connect with people on a personal level and make them feel welcome, especially middle and high school age youth.
3. Familiarity with congregational-based youth programming or past involvement in Bible camp work.
4. Hold a valid driver’s license and auto insurance and have reliable transportation.
5. Be available flexible hours including evenings and weekends with an average of 10-15 hours per week during the academic year and as needed during summer.
6. High school degree required. College experience or degree is a plus.
7. Successful passing of a background check.

Organizational relationships

1. Reports to the Pastor.
2. Serves on the Youth Board. 
3. Meets as requested with the Church Council and collaborates with other Boards as needed—such as Education Board, for example. 
4. Attends staff meetings as requested. 

Responsibilities

The Director of Youth and Family Ministry will plan, coordinate, and lead activities including, but not limited to:

1. Service opportunities at St. John and/or in the community (1-2 month).
2. Plan separate fellowship gatherings for high school and middle school youth (1-2 times a month for each middle and high school).
3. Coordinate, plan, and participate in an overnight service trip or camp ministry at least every other summer (includes plan itinerary and related fundraising as needed).
4. Facilitate periodic youth participation in worship services, as well as regularly participate in worship life at St. John.
5. Create a calendar/newsletter for youth to be distributed regularly during the academic year.
